Train Equus - Starters & Young Horses
Lynn has started many young horses, bringing the horse on at its own pace, with patience and understanding, teaching the skills a horse needs for whatever job it is destined to do. True starters are horses that have had nothing more than halter training, if they are healthy and well grown they can usually be started without any problems, this is undoubtly one of the most important phases of a horse's life, when good behaviour patterns are developed and instilled. The aim is to produce a thinking, alert horse, responsive to aids and attentive to our presence, a safe horse to be around. Lynn will sometimes also work with 're-starters', these are horses that people have begun the process with and have had problems, sadly there are a lot of these, many people underestimate just what it takes to start a horse. These horses undergo an assessment week, after which an honest opinion can be given as to the quality of horse that can be produced. Starting is distinctly different from 'breaking' a horse. Some horses can cope with dominant training methods where the trainer's will is imposed on the horse, sometimes with force, others cannot, and end up unpredictable or 'difficult'. Remedial work can be done with many horses, but remember, it takes much longer to undo learned behaviour than to do it right in the first place! [ Young Horse Clinics ] |
